What Temperature Qualifies A Fever?

A fever is a normal defending response to fight against an infection or illness. In fact, it is a signal that your body’s immune system is at work. It is actually a curative reaction.

Below is a quick reference to temperatures that qualify a fever:

  • Normal temperature
    97 to 99 degrees (36 to 37.2 Celcius)
  • Low-grade fever
    99 to 100.9 degrees (37.3 to 38.3 Celcius)
  • Common fever
    101 to 103.5 degrees (38.4 to 39.7 Celcius)
  • High fever
any fever over 103.6 degrees (39.8 Celcius)

Generally fever does not harm your brain or your body, albeit it does increase your need for fluid intake. However if the fever is persistent and where high fevers do not lower, seek medical attention.

Fever in an infant less than 3 months is of a major worry, as it may indicate the onset of serious bacterial or viral infections. A feverish child with a seizure should also be checked by a physician.
If a baby is 6 weeks old or younger and develops a fever of 101 or higher (above 38.4 Celcius), it is a medical emergency and warrants immediate medical attention.

Temperatures taken at the rectum is usually 1 degree higher than those taken orally.

Here are some natural remedies to bring about fever relief:

  • Hot Face Bath
Step 1. Fill a bowl with boiling hot water, then bend over and use a towel to cover head, making sure there is no gap for the heat to escape. Inhale steam for 5 minutes.

Step 2. Wipe face towel soaked in ice water. Step 3. Repeat steps 1 & 2. Do a total of 3 times. Make sure the hot water in the bowl stays steamy hot throughout.

  • Cold mitten friction
Dip mitten in cold water and rub/massage on the hands and body. The friction helps to stimulate blood circulation.
  • Fever bath
Fill tub with hot water (hot enough to tolerate without burning your skin) and soak for about 20 minutes. Maintain the water’s temperature throughout. Place a ice-cool towel on the head. Drink lots of room temperature water before and during and after the bath to prevent dehydration.
