Quick Tips On Podcasting

April 19th, 2007
  • Podcast is coined from the words “iPod” and “broadcast”.
  • Podcasting is the delivering of audio content to MP3 players or devices that support MP3 playback.
  • Podcasting was developed by a former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer.
  • What is needed to create/record a podcast is a recording software (e.g. GarageBand and SoundForge Audio Studio) and a headset with a microphone.
  • After the audio content is created (usually in MP3 format), it is posted to a web server. The podcaster will publish a RSS news feed that contains the audio file (file’s name and description). Subscribers to that newsfeed will have any new audio files downloaded automatically when their MP3 players are connected to the computer.
  • In other words, instead of reading a RSS newsfeed, podcasting is listening to a RSS feed.
  • Podcasting is like having your very own radio station.
  • Any media player (noy only an iPod) that supports MP3 files can be used to listen to any downloaded podcast.
  • To automatically syndicate files to an iPod, a podcast reader/client is required such as iPodder, iPodderX, iTunes, which are free and are available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
  • Podcasts are used for audio books, personal blogs, radio shows, news, educational/learning guides, audio tour guides and et al.
  • Podcasts can also be listened to as a streaming media, directly from the site.
