Self Harm
- It is also called 'self-injury' as it is any form of physical injury that one inflicts upon one's own body. This includes cutting, self-hitting, head banging, burning, hair pulling, skin picking & self-biting.
- One finds the need to hurt oneself so that relief can be felt. It is a way of releasing painful emotions, tensions & anger. But because such relief feelings don't last, self-hurt acts would have to be repeated again & again.
- Self-harm is a sign of emotional distress, where one is trying to cope with the unmanageable pain that one is experiencing. It is a symptom of another underlying problem.
- It usually happens to females.
- If you know someone who is a self-injurer or perhaps you are the one, don't go on please, get a referral to meet a counsellor or a psychologist. It is perfectly alright to ask for help.
