Makeup

  • Before you discard your old mascara, save the wand! Wash it clean and dry it properly then use it to brush your eyebrows or alternate use between the new mascara.

  • Turn an empty lipstick into a mini-jewelery case for a thin gold chain or small earrings. Clean the inner part of the lipstick before placing your jewelery into this perfect secret hideout!

Home decor

  • Gather all unwanted compact discs (CDs) and create a futuristic home decor accessory, a CURTAIN! Just get hold of either huge S-shaped hooks, ribbons (sliver color) or even nylon fishing lines to join up the CDs (the number of CDs needed depends on how long and wide you want your curtain to be). Afterwhich, tie each string of CDs onto the curtain pole or use it as a room divder.

  • Re-introduce unusble diskettes as coasters, greeting cards or even wall tiles.

  • Fold small-size colored LDPE plastic bags to resemble sticks until you get a bunch. Next, drop the whole bunch into a vase or cup (or anything) and there you have it, a colorful home decor accessory!

  • Retain lids and caps from unwanted bottles/cartons (e.g. detergent, perfume, foundation, bottled drinks) and hang them side by side on your kitchen tiles or walls.

  • Sweet and pretty-looking candy paper boxes are a waste to throw. Save them by putting magnets inside each empty box and then stick them up on the fridge door.

Storage

  • An empty CD plastic case can store bits and pieces of small newspaper or magazine clippings, name cards, photographs, receipts, bookmarks, stickers or postage stamps. A nice and slim display case.

  • Trim off the top portion of a plastic water bottle (size: 500ml or more) and invert the bottom portion to cover a standing champagne glass.

  • To stack 2 or 3 rice bowls that are covered with cling wrap on top of each other in the fridge, place a CD in between each bowl to support the weight of the upper bowl.

Easy crafts

  • With disposable wooden chopsticks or ice-cream sticks you can create something simple like the following : at 1 end of the stick, cut a slit at the center of the stick's tip, about 2 cm deep using a mini hacksaw or a strong penknife. Next, color the stick with colored permanent ink or simply add a coat of varnish (otherwise uninvited creatures will come crawing especially when the wood is raw and inexpensive). Afterwhich, slide in a photo, name card or clipping between the slit and you can place the stick inside a vase, pen holder or anywhere you wish. Create better effect by varying the stick's length and the size of whatever you are putting in between.

  • See "Home decor"

Wardrobe

  • Donate or sell clothes and accessories you do not need to charities, thrift shops, theatre companies or get your friends to rent a stall with you at a weekend flea market to clear all unwanted stuff and at the same time enjoy the market experience.

  • Rent and not buy costumes, gowns or suits for special occasions.

  • Reuse zippers from old clothings.

  • Cut off the elastic band of an unwanted panty hose and slip it around a stack of newspapers or magazines to hold them together.

  • Kid-size socks make unique handphone pouches.

  • Use T-shirts as pillow protectors.

Miscellaneous

  • Keep big envelopes (A4 or bigger) and use them to keep a book or magazine from getting crumbled edges while you carry it around in your bag. Also put slippers or shoes in them when packing for a trip.

  • Unused envelopes that are stuck together can open right up once they come under a hair dryer or place them in a microwave for a minute.

  • Do you have Christmas, birthday, graduation or wedding cards with sentimental value but having difficulty finding a place to keep them? Solution: slot them in between your books as bookmarks or create a card album (like a photo album) which you can flip through from time to time.
Another refreshing tip : if your photo albums are organised in a chronological manner, why not insert these cards into the same album according to the time you received it? Then you will be able to view photos and cards all at the same time!

  • Create a picture coloring book for kids by cutting out black and white comic strips or appropriate advertisements from newspapers and pasting them onto a scrapbook.

  • Convert plastic drink bottles to bowling pins.

  • Small yogurt/cheese plastic tubs can be used as disposable party cups.

  • Retain plastic or glass containers such as cups, bottles or boxes and use them either as vases, flower pots, pen holders or art and craft materials for your kids.

  • Hold a "Go green" theme party or gathering.
