“Aerobic exercise improves ability to coordinate multiple things, long-term planning and your ability to stay on task for extended periods. Resistance training, which is much less studied than the aerobic side of things, “improves your ability to focus amid distracters.”
- Michelle Voss, University of Iowa
If you value good health and brain power, exercise should be an important part of your life. Here’s why: a review of more than 100 studies, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, revealed that both aerobic and resistance training have an impact on maintaining cognitive and brain health no matter how old you are.
At the University of Iowa, psychology professor Michelle Voss and her colleagues found that:
- Aerobic exercises improves ability to coordinate multiple things, long-term planning and stay focus on your task for long periods.
- Resistance training, such as weight lifting, also improves your ability to focus amid distracters.
- People in their 60s who exercise for six months showed an increase in gray and white brain matter in areas of the brain that normally diminish with age. Older people tend to experience a shrinking brain in areas that control memory formation, but those who exercise experience a growing brain in those same areas.
- Exercise reduces risk of developing strokes.
- Inactive men with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s are four times more likely to develop the disease than men with a similar genetic predisposition who remain physically active.

Exercise has many benefits in building and restoring health even if you have joint pain or when you are having a cold. Everyday Health lists 10 of such examples that may seem like a surprise when in fact exercising is one of an effective way to find relief.
- Recovering From Surgery
It might be alright to exercise after surgery. According to recent studies, patients who had undergone surgery, including cancer patients can reap great benefits from post-surgery workout regimes. People who have had joint replacements and those who have undergone certain types of plastic surgery should be careful of their activities.
Be careful with the amount and intensity of exercise. It should be within what you can handle.
- When You Have a Cold
Research has found that a cold virus-carrying body responds no differently to exercise than a healthy body. Some research even found that working out helped relief a cold.
- When You Have A Headache
Exercise reduces stress and improves cardiovascular fitness and hence it can soothe the pain right out of your head.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Regular exercise can help to improve your circulation, helping your body to use oxygen more efficiently, build your energy levels, and lower your blood pressure.
- Pregnancy
Only one of every six pregnant women actually gets the recommended amount of physical activity, which is 30 or more minutes of moderate physical activity on a near-daily basis. Contrary to the belief, exercise will not harm the woman nor her fetus. There are many benefits for exercising, such as:
- Back and musculoskeletal pain
- Lowering maternal blood pressure
- Reducing swelling
- Improving postpartum moods.
- Osteoarthritis or Joint Pain
It may sound weird to exercise when your joints are hurting but research has shown that regular exercise is actually a very effective and highly recommended form of treatment. Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints to protect the joints and provide support. Appropriate aerobic and resistance-training exercises are recommended
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
When Swedish scientists assigned one group of IBS patients to a regular exercise routine, the active patients experienced improvement of their symptoms by about 51 percent, compared to those did not exercise. Exercise has been proven to reduce stress, boost general health, and help with gastrointestinal problems like constipation.
- Menopause
Just three hours of exercise a week has been shown to significantly reduce signs of menopause, and improving quality of life. It’s never too late to start an exercise program.
- Chronic Pain
Unlike medication, physical activity can actually treat the underlying source of your pain and will improve chronic pain symptoms in the long run. Exercises that helpful include those that emphasize stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as low-impact activities like swimming.
- Smoking
There are many psychological and physical benefits to exercising away your addiction, including limiting weight gain and combating cravings. Studies show that withdrawal symptoms and cigarette cravings decrease during exercise and remain low for as long as 50 minutes afterwards. Exercise also decreases your appetite and will help you reduce stress and mood swings.
