Merck’s two international experimental trials for an AIDS vaccine which began in December 2004 were stopped after researchers realized that the vaccine did not prevent infection with the AIDS virus, in fact, there was a surge in infection among vaccinated volunteers.
The Merck vaccine trials were conducted in 15 cities in the United States, including Boston, Los Angeles and New York, and three in Canada and also in Peru, Brazil, Australia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
Three thousand volunteers participated in the trials.
