Breastfeeding Does Not Raise Baby’s IQ

April 11th, 2007

A study suggests that breast feeding has little effect on boosting a baby’s intelligence. When breastfed babies are truly more intelligent, that is because their mothers are intelligent.

UK researchers from the Medical Research Council and University of Edinburgh made this conclusion after analyzing data from 5,475 children and 3,161 mothers in the US. They pointed out that breastfed children who score high in IQ tests come from good background.

The researchers recognized that while breast feeding has many advantages for the child and mother, enhancement of the child’s intelligence is unlikely to be among them.
