The use of cellphones for a decade or more doubles our risk of getting a tumour on a nerve connecting the ear to the brain. That’s according to a group of scientists who have surveyed the results of 11 different studies.
And in the case of children, Prof Kjell Mild, of Orbero University, Sweden, who is a Government adviser and lead researcher, said they shouldn’t be using cell phones because of their thinner skulls and developing nervous system, which makes them vulnerable to the tumor.
He also expressed concern that the danger may be even greater than his study suggests because cancers need a minimum of 10 years to develop.
In addition, the study’s researchers are calling for more research into safety issues, particularly their potential links to Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
The Swedish scientists want a revision of the emission standard for cell phones and other sources of radiation, citing the current standard as not safe.
The current international standard is designed to prevent harmful heating of living tissue or induced electrical currents in the body but does not take into account the risk of cancer.
