The Washing Machine That Needs No Detergent

August 23rd, 2007

Haier WasH20 washing machine

The WasH20 works by electrolysing water before the wash cycle begins to separate water into OH- and H+ ions (electrically charged atoms that have lost electrons). The OH- ions attracts and removes the dirt while the H+ ions acts like bleach, sterilising the clothes.

However it may be harder to wash away stubborn stains from grass or coffee and the machine cannot be used for woolen garments. The WasH20 does come with an option for detergent wash mode.

Some 200,000 of the detergent-free washing machines have been sold since their launch in China in 2006. They will soon be available in France in November 2007, and in the UK early next year.
