The objective of good communication is understanding. Good communication is more than just talking. It involves good listening.

  • WHY LISTEN?
    1. Allows for better inter-personal relationships. Listening assures your audience that you are interested in them and in what they have to say.
    2. Allows for higher productivity: Do things right the first time. Listen carefully.
  • GOOD LISTENING STARTS WITH THE ATTITUDE
    1. Listen to the King
      :: Treat the other person as royalty.
      :: Acknowledge that the other person is important.
      :: Honour the person whom you listen to.

    2. Listen with undivided attention
      :: Focus your attention on the person whom you are talking to.
      :: Provide uninterrupted hearing.
      :: Showing concern when we are focused.
  • GOOD LISTENING USES MORE THAN OUR EAR
    1. Listen with your ear
      :: Listen to the words spoken.
      :: Remember what was spoken.
      :: Listen to the tone.

    2. Listen with your eyes
      :: Have eye contact with the person you talk to!
      :: Do not be distracted and look elsewhere.
      :: Listen to the body language.

    3. Listen with your heart
      :: Don’t just pay attention to the facts. Listen to the feelings.
