Aware that this words would be viewed skeptically by those in Congress and the country who thought him too inexperienced for the post, concerned by the speech only a short time earlier of Soviet Chairman Nikita Khrushchev that sounded like a call for a worldwide Communist revolution, John F. Kennedy wanted his first address as President of the United States to challenge his multiple audiences: to summon the American people to greatness, to remind free nations of their obligations, to offer the Soviet Union a choice between confrontation and cooperation, and to be his eloquent best.
