Facts

  • Hemorrhoids are also known as haemorrhoids or piles.

  • Piles is a term used since the 15th century for hemorrhoids.

  • Hemorrhoids are described as clumps ("cushions") of tissue within the walls of the anus that contain blood vessels.

  • These cushions can become enlarged and swollen in the walls of the anus and at times around the rectum.

  • They cause itching, pain when passing the stools and often bleeding occurs.

  • Stress, pregnancy, obesity, lack of fiber, chronic diarrhea, constipation and tumors in the pelvis can cause the hemorrhoids to enlarge.

  • Our upright posture is believed to bring about piles which is unusual in four-legged animals.

  • One of the main causes for hemorrhoids is over-straining in the toilet especially when stools are hard.

  • If untreated, hemorrhoids can protrude from the anus.

  • Piles may mask a bigger problem, such as diverticular disease or colorectal cancer.

The relief plan

  • Drink lots of fluids.

  • Feast on lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Take a tablespoon of olive oil in the evening to help soften stools.

  • Soothe the area by applying aloe vera gel or castor oil if piles are on the outside

  • Moisten cotton or toilet paper with witch hazel and apply around the area.

  • Avoid rough toilet paper. Dab gently to clean.

  • Use a cold compress or bath the area with cold water.

  • Do not resist the body's call for a bowel movement.
