Varicose Veins Of The Uterus

July 31st, 2007

This is also known as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS), which is similar to varicose veins in the legs, where one-way valves become faulty causing a blood build-up in the veins. This build-up will stretch, enlarge and widen the veins around the uterus and ovaries. This syndrome was first described in 1857.

Pelvic congestion, or pelvic varicosities, can cause chronic pelvic pain but this is provided that all other common causes of pelvic pain are ruled out. Pelvic pain can worsen after sexual intercourse or during menstruation or after prolonged standing.

One way to diagnose this condition is through a special X-ray dye study called pelvic venography. Contract dye is injected into the pelvic veins and X-rays are taken. Pelvic varicosities can be seen during an abdominal or pelvic surgery, or on a pelvic ultrasound.
