Free Prescription Drugs Giveaways Draw Compaints
Drug companies issuing coupons, rebates and promotions want to get people to take prescription drugs such as viagara and sleeping pills, which they claim will give them the chance to try the drugs orhelp lower patient costs. However consumer groups say this may draw people to risky drugs they may not need and without any long-term benefit. 23 of such consumer groups are seeking a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ban on the giveaways.
The drug companies try to grab customers’ attention in magazines and on web sites. One of them is Pfizer Inc., which offers a free prescription of viagra for every six filled. Patients can try seven days of the Sanofi-Aventis sleeping pill Ambien at no cost.
