Eating Blueberries Protects Against Colon Cancer
A study has found that taking blueberries could fight colon (or bowel) cancer due to a compound called pterostilbene, which is one of the antioxidants found in the pigment that gives blueberries their color. The darker the berries, the higher the concentration of antioxidants.
Researchers at Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a joint study on 18 rats with colon cancer, where 9 rats were placed on a balanced daily diet while the rest were given the same diet supplemented with pterostilbene. After eight weeks, the rats fed with pterostilbene had 57 percent fewer pre-cancerous lesions compared to the control group. Pterostilbene also caused a reduction in the growth rate of the cancerous cells and inhibited certain genes involved in inflammation.
