Facts
- A hangover is basically caused by toxins from alcohol and dehydration.
- Congeners are toxic chemicals produced as by-products during fermentation and they are often the cause of hangovers. Drinks containing congeners include brandy, cognac, bourbon, champagne and red wine. White spirits such as vodka and gin contain lesser congeners.
- Red wine gives the drinker the most headaches and causes nausea because it has high levels of congeners and toxic chemicals compared to other drinks.
- Alcohol breaks down sugar supplies in the liver and because our body cells need glucose for energy to function, the lack of sugar makes the body feel weak, lethargic and lightheaded.
- The already busy liver is loaded with the task to remove the excess toxins from the consumed alcohol. It takes the liver about an hour to process one standard drink. That is why excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can drain and weaken the liver which means it can break down, no longer function properly and ultimately become a candidate for liver disease or cancer.
- Kidneys are also required to work twice as hard to flush out the fluid, leaving the body dehydrated.
- Vitamin deficiencies (e.g. vitamin B1) can result when excessive alcohol is consumed.
- Severe hangovers could risk heart attacks.
- Alcohol increases the absorption of lead, a toxic metal.
- Alcohol consumption, even in moderate amounts is a risk factor for developing breast cancer. Various studies have shown that pre and postmenopausal women who drink alcohol daily are at risk, whether beer, wine or liquor makes no difference. It may not be clear why alcohol increases the risk, however an important observation is that with a higher amount of alcohol intake, higher levels of estrogen are found in the blood. Too much of estrogen can initiate cancerous growth.

The hangover deliverance
- Drink alcohol slowly.
- Mix the drink with fruits or flat water. A carbonated drink will hasten alcohol absorption.
- Drink lots of water (or fruit juices at least) in between drinks to prevent dehydration.
- Honey should be drunk before or after drinking so as to replace sugar.
- Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which can help prevent a hangover. Try 6 capsules before drinking.
- Milk thistle, also known as St Mary's thistle is well known as a liver tonic. It protects the liver against toxins and can help repair damaged liver cells (hepatocytes). 1 to 2 200 mg of milk thistle capsules can help support the liver in processing and clearing of the alcohol from the body.
- Dandelion root is considered food for the liver because it aids metabolism and detoxification.
- Prepare a ginger drink (powder or tea) or chew ginger sweets to treat nausea and vomiting. Sniffing a little peppermint essential oil could also work.
- Celery juice or one tablespoon of honey can help relieve headaches.
- Try rubbing half a fresh lime on the forehead to relieve headaches.
- Thyme tea is also a popular remedy to hasten recovery. It relieves headaches.
- Kuduz is a chinese herb found in the thickets and forests of China, it has a very big root that has been used to reduce alcohol cravings.
- Avoid fatty meat. Excess meat slows down the already overloaded liver.
- Refrain from coffee, the caffeine will only dehydrate the body faster.
- For a soothing concoction : mix 1 teaspoon of lime juice with a pinch of cumin into a cup of grapefruit or orange juice.
- The best way to be delivered? Give up drinking.

If you are going to drink, choose drinks that are mixed with water to reduce the hangover; e.g. scotch and water or whiskey and water. You can add lime or lemon to improve the taste. Also, it is easier and less notable to alternate your drinks throughout with straight water or change to straight water when you feel
that you have had enough and you're not ready to stop.
