Fridge Coolant Leak

My Beko fridge smells like gas at the back – but still seems to be working?

The smell is not like the gas on the hob, more like a gas cylinder, so I am sure it is not a general gas leak, and it is only in the vicinity of the fridge – round the back not inside it. I have cleaned it inside and out thoroughly and am confident that it is not any food inside it (seeing as the smell is not inside at all.) I have called Beko and they think that it can’t be the coolant as 1. the fridge still works and 2. they said that the coolant does not smell. It is a very elderly fridge though (nearly 11 years), so perhaps an older coolant might smell. Any suggestions? Do I spend money on the call-out charge for an engineer just to discover that I need to buy a new fridge anyway?

It is possible that dust has accumulated and that and/or perhaps an oil residue due to the heat caused by dust buildup is what you are smelling. You said you cleaned it. Did that include all the coils and around the motor, the whole works? Try that. My bet is that will do the trick.
