Producers Want Their Farmed Fish To Be Labeled Organic
The National Organics Standards Board had met to evaluate on the question of whether farmed fish should qualify for the federal government’s official organic label.
The farm fishing industry contends that a U.S. organic standard for farmed fish will help producers improve operations and compete against foreign producers whose organic standards are set in their respective countries.
The opponents say that would violate the Agriculture Department’s own standards as the fish meal and fish oil used in fish farming concentrates harmful pollutants such as PCBs and mercury. In addition, they say the most common method of fish farming, called open pen net farming, is inconsistent with the principles of organic agriculture.
