Facebook Profiles Can Be Used To Detect Narcissism

A new University of Georgia study suggests that online social networking sites such as Facebook might be useful tools for detecting whether someone is a narcissist.

The researchers gave personality questionnaires to nearly 130 Facebook users, analyzed the content of the pages and had untrained strangers view the pages and rate their impression of the owner’s narcissism. They found that the number of Facebook friends and wallposts that individuals have on their profile pages correlates with narcissism.

Narcissists are also more likely to choose glamorous, self-promoting pictures for their main profile photos, she said, while others are more likely to use snapshots.

Untrained observers were able to detect narcissism, too. The researchers found that the observers used three characteristics – quantity of social interaction, attractiveness of the individual and the degree of self promotion in the main photo – to form an impression of the individual’s personality.

  1. Seriously, DONT’ give him/her attention, ignore them totally!

  2. I think a possible indicator on FB is people who wait for everyone to request their friendship. Not all N’s do this, but some do to ‘test’ other’s worship. I’m especially noticing that some engaged people never mention their significant other. They love to announce “I’m engaged,” yet you can’t figure out to who! The easiest way to spot an N on FB is to leave a comment on their page that they somehow take as a threat to their image and they delete your comment. Especially if the comment is really benign. N’s are so afraid of tarnishing their image, that they will do anything to look good. My favorite N almost never comments on his page or others because he doesn’t want to let anything slip. The ones who rarely mention the name of their intended or never comment on friends pages are N’s. It gets me when their worshippers are always leaving them comments, but it they almost never feel the need to respond.
