Asbestos Cancer
Facts
- 'Asbestos' is a name given to a group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of fibers. These fibers can be separated into thin threads but they are not affected by heat or chemicals and do not conduct electricity.
- For these reasons, asbestos has been widely used in many industries.
- There are four types of asbestos which have been used commercially:
1. Chrysotile, or white asbestos
2. Crocidolite, or blue asbestos
3. Amosite, which usually has brown fibers
4. Anthophyllite, which usually has gray fibers.
- The exposure to asbestos increases one's risk of several serious diseases which includes lung cancer and mesothelioma.
