Is Your Nail Polish Safe?
Nail polish and nail polish remover contain organic solvents that are toxic when we breathe in and apply them on our nails. These harmful solvents include formaldehyde, phthalates (dibutyl phthalate or DBP), toulene, acetone and ethyl acetate. Organic solvents are also ingredients found in dry cleaning chemicals, glues, paints and permanent inks.
The solvents are volatile (vaporizes readily) liquids at room temperature. They accumulate in our bodies and because they are fat-soluble, they will gather in lipid-rich tissues such as the brain, myelin (nerve sheath), and adipose (fat).
These solvents are petrochemically based and are a source of petrochemical pollutants, which are also called xenohormones, where xeno means foreign. Xenohormones have negative hormonal effects on the body.
Solvents in very small amounts can deform a developing fetus.
Acquarella, Suncoat and HABA are brands that make water-based nail polishes, free of solvents and are safer to use compared to many major brands in the market today.
